Hi Gang,

That old Hurricane Ike really hit us. We had so many trees down especially on power lines that today is day 18 without power. Right now there are 7 power company trucks and a tree trimmer bunch on my street. Hopefully we will get lit up sometime today. We have been running a generator 24/7 and it has saved our a$$ but the gasoline is about $40 a day to run it. We have it tied into the breaker box so it can run anything but the A/C. But I am so tired of listening to that thing run. Even when I leave to go shopping or find some lunch, seems like I can still hear it. Our cable came on last night so now I can get out online.

We took a big hickory limb through the roof of our greenhouse and lots of smaller limbs and debris on the house and all over the yard. Our lawn man charged us $140 to clean the place up. This has been an expensive storm but then I think about all the people who lost their homes and all their stuff. I guess we are kindy lucky it was not worse on us.

Anyway, I was able to wire in the shop on an extention and could turn a few pens while the power was off. Only could use one tool at a time or I would trip the breaker on the generator but better than nothing.

Now I am looking for the fellow who sent me 6 Banksia seed pods a couple of months ago. I finally got a couple of blanks to turn and inlayed the holes with turquoise and they sold great. I want to buy some more of these quickly as I have a craft show coming up soon. If you still have some of the big pods, please contact me ASAP. Or if someone knows who this guy is, please let me know.

So anyhow, we made it through OK, may have power today and we are back online (with the generator).

George

I saw some whole bankasia pods down at Rockler on 59 south last time I was in there. Might be worth a call to them to see if they have any and how much they are.

Sounds like Spring got about the same as Crosby from the storm. We just got our power back Sunday. I agree, I was heartily sick of hearing that generator buzz. But all in all, I'm sure glad we decided to move to Crosby instead of Seabrook 5 years ago when we were househunting.

Good luck getting the AC back on.

My wood stack has a couple of pieces of black walnut limbs and some willow but mostly what fell were pines and oaks. I drove all around looking at all the wood on the curbs but no luck. I have a neighbor who now has plenty of pine............

George,
Good to see you back on line.. glad you made it ok.

My SIL lives in the Woodlands as does her son. She lost power at her apartment house for about 3 or 4 days... her son's house was out only about 24 hours... He had to go to Dallas for business a couple of days after Ike, so SIL was able to stay at his place and dog sit while he was gone.

My SIL has two step sons in the Seabrook and Dickinson area. They're okay, one of the boys has a boat repair business at the foot of the bridge from Seabrook to Kemah... haven't heard hot that fared yet.

I left Houston the week after Rita... glad I live in the mountains.. Hurricanes can't reach us up here.

Thanks for your comments. Power went on at 2:30 today and we once again have A/C. Maybe we'll get some much needed sleep tonight. Even after I had turned off the generator and put it back in the garage, I felt I could still hear it. Well, it was running 24/7 for 18 days. I guess I should expect to hear it in my sleep.

Anybody ever turn a Magnolia seed pod. Storm knocked down enough of them to leave them 6" deep on the driveway. They ought to be good for something.

Anyhow, we are about 90% back to normal. Still have a huge hickory limb through the roof of our greenhouse and a pond full of debris. And a lot of extension cords to coil up and put away. Couple more days and we should be ok.

We certainly fared better than this neighbor who had 2 pick-ups and a car parked right where these 2 trees fell.....

Glad you ok. Sort of neat that you could work in your shop even when the power is off. I've sometimes had the idea of looking into making one of those foot powered lathes just for the fun of it, though at times like that it'd come in handy I guess. Good luck on getting the power back!
