My scroll chuck is stuck on my lathe. I have a Jet 1442, which has a button on it that locks the spindle so I can, in theory, easily remove whatever I have screwed on. The problem is that in turning a bowl, the chuck is now screwed on way too tight. I tried using a hammer against one of the pins, but no luck, and I'm afraid to hit it much harder for fear of damaging the lathe. So I have 2 questions:

1. Any advice on how to remove the chuck?
2. Any advice on how to prevent this from happening again?

Not sure about the removal you'd need to use (I used a hammer and wrench when I did it ONCE lol) I was told to cut a 'washer out of milk carton plastic to keep it from over tightening. Since doing that I've had no problem.
 
I have the Delta 46-715 which uses the Reaves drive as does your Jet and what I have done is insert a worm screw into as large a blank as your lathe bed will take and chuck it down and using it for leverage to spin your chuck off after locking your spindle. I dont know if this will work in your case but it has been successful for me.

As for preventing this from happening most suppliers Craft or PSI etc sell a plastic washer the fits between the chuck and the shoulder of your lathes spindle. Maybe some others will offer a better solution.

Easy part first - 2) Nylon or Teflon washer for the spindle.

Now for the other part:
1) Take a piece of square stock - 3x3 - about 6" long and cross drill for a 1/2 or 5/8 steel rod. Clamp one end in chuck and run the talistock up to support the end but allow for the chuck to back off slightly. Lock the spindle and use the newly created 'T' wrench to loosen the chuck. If that does not do it you may need to use a liquid wrench on the threads. I use PB Blaster for stubbon threads.

Disconnect power to the lathe before you insert the cross steel bar.
 
Another method would be to get a piece of 1/2-3/" square steel about 3" long. Put that in the chuck and tighten it, then lock the spindle. Use a BIG wrench on the steel. Seems to me that it should work.
 
Thanks to all for the advice. I got the scroll chuck off by putting a 3 foot long board sideways in the jaws, which gave me enough leverage. I'll be getting/making a plastic washer before I try this stunt again.

I do not use the spacer washers, I keep a strap wrench next to my lathe and it has always been able to get my chuck off.

Glad it's off. But that method sounds like asking for an easy way to destroy the chuck. Three foot is a lot of leverage. Mike's answer was going to be mine. A strap or chain wrench works OK. I use nylon washers, purchased at local hardware store to prevent over tightening.
 
Another alternative woud be to use:
Craftsman Strap Wrench, Aluminum
Sears item #00945571000 Mfr. model #45571 @ &lt;$15
or if the diameter of the chuck is small enough, perhaps an inexpensive automotive oil filter removal tool @ &lt;$5

I would hesitate to put 3 feet of leverage on the chuck unless a very light touch was used.
