I think you should have kept it instead of burning it. Why not give rotary carving a try? You might find you really like it. Especially for things like your tiki.

I wanted to carve something, because it always looked so cool.

The truth was I just didn't like the process. Might just be the tool I was using, or my lack of patience... :)
