...So I made one.

This is a tool designed to take 12mm round carbide inserts so that I can cut softer stones like alabaster with reckless abandon, and morta becomes just another wood. Plus, I never have to sharpen it - I just replace the cutter when it's worn out. It cuts polyester as if it was butter, and Trustone practically melts away at it's touch. I'm going to make one for diamond inserts, and one for square inserts, allowing me to do all kinds of roughing and shaping of materials freehand on the wood lathe.

Wood you look at that. NICE. Could lay it down in the shop anywhere's and spot it. Good Job.

Very nice looking tool Kurt. I like the idea of coloring the handle. I keep all my tools in a bucket and from the top they all look the same, so I'm always grabbing the wrong one.

Thanks guys. The inserts are RDMT if I recall correctly. I got them from an eBay seller.

The shaft is 29/64 O-1 drill rod stock, and I shaped the recess for the cutter using my belt grinder, then cleaned it up with files. The reinforcing ring is made from a hunk of aluminum I had hanging around, and the handle is a piece of oak that I uncovered in the workshop. Believe it or not, the hardest part about making this was getting the handle that green color!

All I've use it on is pliable so far. The one caveat that I've found is that it doesn't cut as fast as regular HSS tools, but with respect to some materials, I think that will be a good thing. I have't exhaustively tested it yet, but so far I like it a lot for certain things.
