Solution: Set your gauge so it just misses the blade. Put a red line (or yellow, some highly visible color) right next to the miter adjusting head. Every time you start cutting, make sure you can't see the mark, or it is in the "safe" position.

Also you can take a scratch awl and using a straight edge along the saw blade put a scratch all the way across the top of the table saw top thus indicating the inside or outside edge of the blade. This indicates the kerf of the blade don't you know!

This way whatever is OVER the line gets cut off or cut into.
