I'm doing a pen in Black Ebony and Ivory. i have done two mock=ups with ebony and Am. Holly. The problem is, the ebony dust keeps making the holly dark. If it does that to the Ivory, it would not be a good thing. I am thinking I may try to stableize the ivory before before I turn but I don't know if that will work either. I just need it to be a clean white when finished. All suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Cut VERY gently with a sharp skew. Finish.

Or, if you must sand, seal with thin CA first. Then the colors won't mix. But you have to keep adding it as you sand, so it's kind of a PITA. Getting the final finish from the skew is far superior.

A skew works well or if you have a carbide cutting tool, you can make it very smooth and finish it without sanding. Just make sure you are using a sharp tool and very light cuts whatever tool you are using.

Ebony and Ivory...the pen will most likely be beautiful but both of these materials are prone to cracking.

Use a sanding sealer (or something else...thin CA, etc) and use it often. I don't think the ivory will be as prone to picking up the ebony dust as the holly is but the ebony may pick up the ivory dust. Good luck and I look forward to seeing the finished pen.
Do a good turn daily!
