I may be wrong here but, A stainless steel rod will be stainless steel, a filler rod will have other properties in it to make welding possable. I can remember using a coat hanger to weld cast iron. Jim S

There are different alloys of stainless steel. 304 stainless, for example, is often called "food grade" stainless because it is commonly used in food processing applications. 316 stainless (a.k.a. "marine" stainless) contains less chromium and more nickel and is more corrosion resistant.

308 stainless, which is the alloy in question, is very similar to 304, and is used to weld 304 stainless.

In short, 308L stainless steel welding rod is "regular stainless steel".

I hope that helps,
Eric

I did read about the different tyoes 304/308/316 and any of them are fine for me,I just wanted to make sure the "filler rods" didn't have something odd in them.As long as it stays shiny and its nice and round that is all that really matters. Thanks and Hello Eric,Victor
