I was gifted a piece of wood from the Great State of Texas and was told that a local fellow (A Texan)said that it was a thorn tree. My question is what is the proper name of the tree. I`m sorry but a the present time I am unable to down photos but it has some very serious thorns.
I greatly appreciate any help I can muster.

The Bois d arc in my yard has thorns. I also have a black locust that's so thorny it looks like it sprouted from hell.

Bois d arc does not have thorns.

Tickle tounge tree.

Lo grade anasthetic in the thorns. Indians used it to relieve pain

Boise d'Arc, aka Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) does INDEED have thorns. I have cut a lot of it and have been subject to their thorns many times! They have a thorn on the branch where each leaf attaches.

In addition to the others listed above, Huisache and most of the other Acacias have thorns as well as Capul Negro, Gum Bumelia, and Bastard Oak.

Lots of trees in Texas have thorn! Describe the wood and maybe we can help further.

I ran across lots of "Devils walking stick" trees running around the woods as a kid in Dayton, Tx. You can pull up images of it on google. They are also called Hercules' club, prickly ash or prickly elder. Hope this helps.

Without seeing the tree or having a description of the wood, I saw a picture of a Honey Locust in Texas that was just bristling with thorns... right out of the trunk... Had one in my back yard that took me about 4 years to kill after I cut it down.. it had 4" spikes protruding from the bark along the trunk... am told that the Cherokee before the white man came, used them as needles to sew their buckskins together.. My honey Locust was a white wood, sometimes with light brown streaks... the leaves are small and grown on either side of a single stem.. there's a fancy botanist word for the leaf formation, but can't remember it now.

When you brush against the leaves do they give off a smell? If it smells like one of those bug candles then you have a prickly ash. Can you describe the leaves?
