Of course you know what "Marine" stands for. My a-- rides in Navy equipment.

yeah, you are our docs, you drive us where we want and tell you to go and you pay for our air craft, and you make your Chaplains ride right along with us...

who "owns" who?

I remember running in formation as a Private in the summer of 1975 along the fenceline of MCRD San Diego, looking across into the Naval Training Center at the Navy recruits. They had it easy, just sitting there smoking cigarettes while we ran past in gym gear and combat boots, calling cadence and risking another thrash session if we messed up.

I was proud to be a Marine then, and proud to be a Marine now.

That's good

As a Navy Vet from when the Navy was a real fighting force --- I have personally admired the Gravel Agitators more than Sailors since the rest of the Navy became wimps and the Marine Corps held out.

The Army and the Marine Corps still go in on the ground and still take the bulk of casulties in most military actions - why shouldn't we admire them. No nation on earth can even think about messing with the Navy - it is far and away too powerful.

My personal belief is that there is no place for women in combat and no place for women on Navy fighting ships. The Marine Corps still understands that.

So this survey shows that the Navy is under-appreciated.

The second largest air force in the world, with the better pilots in my opinion (they do everything the AF pilots do, but on a runway that moves and is much shorter).

The largest and best equipped fighting ships in the world. We can sit hundreds of miles off the coast and take out bunkers all day long. And no one can argue with the shock and awe of the old North-Carolina-Class Battleships (I think we should still be using them)

And how soon do they forget...... The SEALS.

I have a ton of respect for the other fighting forces, but if we had to give up all but one force, I'd take the Navy every time.

I am a navy man have been since 1992 and still active duty. i would like to bring to your attention that a submarine which is my job can sit off the coast of any country undetected and destroy it if it need to and they dont have to be very close. But I do have a lot respect for the other branches. They do their parts and all do them well. And no matter what a poll says which ever branch we lose someone from thats another loved one lost and thats something we all need to think about. just my two cents.

Now that I have retired from the Corps, my a-- rides in civilian taxis, but you guys sure did keep your cabs cleaner. (Your chow was better too) Thanks for the rides...Semper Fi

While I always loved to pick on the other branches of the DOD, I also have stood side by side and back to back (and toe to toe once in a while) with many of them when needed, I always knew I was covered and they always knew that they were. We might have worn different uniforms, but they all had the same flag on them and I would have given or taken a bullet for any of them, and some of those that know me here have seen the scars that show that I have taken a few.

I just want to say THANK YOU to each one who has and is serving our country.. God bless!

Hollywood survey

I have been in the Navy for 19 years and I have been on the ground in Iraq with the Marines and Army. Ok so there were a few Air Force there too...kinda. I have friends in all services, and like several have mentioned we all have our purposes (sea taxis for the marines, watching nuke missles sit in one place, guard the embassies, dig fox holes...), and we all support each other.

BUT I am putting a survey to the forum, name a movie that is dedicated directly to the reputation of the Air Force that someone in the Air Force would be proud to say represented their service. I presented this question to my office and the other major joint service office here at the embassy and so far there true has only been one and that one VERY OLD.
Marines, Army and Navy all have classics and newer movies helping raise their reputations.

So far officer and enlisted here have put the big DENIED on movies like "Iron Eagle"(Series), Iron Man (air force were supporting roles, not main story line), Transformers (contended for awhile until it was pointed out this was joint service and as supporting to the story).

I served proud as an Army MP (yea yea here comes the boos and trash) I met people from all 4 branches excluding the SEALs, Rangers and Special Forces all of the Marines I met were crazy SOBs. And I mean it from the bottom of my heart too, great group but they were nuts! I will say though, it was kinda fun to see how red a Gunny Sgt. could get after telling him he needed to step away from the fence line as the gates were not open yet. (ahh the simple pleasures of being an E-4 with a badge:biggrin::biggrin:)

Even more fun to watch an E4 (marine) stop a O6 (navy) in his tracks when he tries to walk through the door of Spook Central. ;) I was one of those squids that no one ever sees.

NAVY

How about Red Flag?

I flew combat in SEA on AC-130 gunships...there wasn't a branch of the service with troops in trouble that wasn't thankful when we came in firing with the 105mm's, 40mm's, and 20mm's...personally, that survey is a bunch of crap...all branches have their jobs and deserve equal respect. JMHO.

anyone read the disclaimer......

This poll is not scientific and reflects the opinions of only those Internet users who have chosen to participate.

Im not really a fan of the long range warfare (navy, airforce etc) - I perfer to be up close and personal, man to maniac, so to speak

Ask any soldier in theatre who the most important bloke in his outfit is and almost all will answer, "the bommy"

Semper fi.

What about this is news?

As my Grandfather so gently pointed out when I got out in 1969, it was the first time in the history of the country that a member of my family was not in the Corps. He never spoke to me again.

The only branch of the armed forces that deserves respect is the United States Armed Forces, all FIVE branches! Any one, man, woman or child, that dons one of those uniforms deserves all our undying respect, regardless of the branch of the magnificent tree!
I was never allowed entry into their midst, medical reasons. But I am proud of them all and give thanks for their sacrifice and extremely difficult work. They deserve much better than we give them. I am proud to have been able to build a few pens for Gary McG to send to our troops. I hope the chance to do it again is offered.

The problem with the survey is that most Americans do not have a clue of what the different duties that each branch is required to do. If you put each branch side by side most Americans could not tell one branch from the other. Most have a Hollywood vision of what they do. But it is a great post because of the jabbing and taunting between all the branches. My family has had all branches covered except for the Coast Guard…. Yes I'll group them in to. Important to our country's defense. My son went renegade, and joined the Army - combat medic with the 3rd ID…. I guess my bell bottoms were hard too fill. LOL… All in all, GREATFULL to all that served.

I guess you can call me a Squid if it makes you feel good. But, I share the same sentiments as Wolftat. I have all the respect in the world for Marines. Your post reminded me of an old song by Mac Davis. "Oh Lord it's hard to be humble" Take care!

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Corps.. Always have, always will. Semper Fi and keep your chisels sharp. By the way the speed of darkness is the same as the speed of light, except in the opposite direction.

As the parent of a Retired Coast Guard Officer... Except in the case of declared war, the US Coast Guard is a search & rescue and law enforcement branch connected to the Department of Transportation. In time of declared war they would become attached to the US Navy.

My son, while on active duty with the USCG, did serve on a US Navy Frigate home ported first in Japan the Longbeach for 2 years in an exchange program of some kind. Of his 5 years service 4 were sea duty - and on deep water.

My son wanted to enlist in the USCG have in '09. Enlistments were closed till 2013.... Most MOS's have the best training according to the Army, Navy, and Marine recruiters. Like my last post they are an important part.

CG is not under the Department of Transportation any more, they are now under Homeland Security. My son has been in 5 years now and plans to make his 20 there. He is currently stationed in Wilmington, NC and is assigned to the USCGC Diligence.

I don't know why this thread is about women, but since you brought it up, it should be noted that there are plenty of WMs in harms way. Just because women cannot yet be 'infantry', doesn't mean that they are not out there taking fire.

That being said, I can't think of a single reason to bar women from serving in a combat position, if they choose those MOSs.

I clearly said it was a personal belief really don't care if anyone agrees or not. I mentioned it because although I am a Navy Vet I admire the Marine Corps more than the Navy today and that is one of the reasons.

I just don't think our nation should send young women, including young mothers, out to get shot or blown up (even if they want to volunteer). I think we are better served leaving that to men.

The second time I went to Iraq the ship I was on dropped us off and stuck around for 31 days and then went home. I had to catch a ride on a C-117 I belive. So I am sure that half of the Navy's job is getting Marines there.

I don't understand why it's OK for men, but not for women. Seems kinda sexist, to me.

That being said, if you had given a 'unit cohesion' or 'sexual tension' argument, I'd have loved to discuss the issue further. A 'women should be home making babies while the big strong man goes and fights' argument is not one that deserves debate, however.

No debate. That is my opinion and I really don't need to justify it, nor do I need to try to change your mind if you have a different opinion.

Nor do I need you changing or putting your "spin" on, what I said -- I neither said or implied anything about what women "should" be doing.

The Services All the way

I ended up in a wheelchair after my time in the Marines. I only wish I could have served longer. I am proud of those I served with and those that have followed me in service , No Matter which Service they were in.

Best Air Force movie was "Dr. Strangelove". Who can forget the sight of Slim Pickens as Major "King" Kong astride his atomic mount, waving his hat as he plummeted to oblivion?

I was a water craft operator for the Army.... Reserves 8 years activated 1. The best part was the jokes about different services.

1. Why does the Marines have the nicest dress uniforms?
The Navy wants their B's to look good.

2. An Army guy is leaving the bathroom without washing his hands, an Air Force comes up and says "Air Force taught us to wash our hands after we use the bathroom." "Army taught us not to pee on our hands"

Ahh good times...
