Well it's really not stealing unless I cut it from a live tree. I drive around to oil rigs all day and when I have the time, I check out the sides of the lease roads for mesquite branches that have been cleared for the road. Most are rotted or have cracks in them that are unusable. I found a piece about 3 weeks ago that looked like I may be able to use. Cut off the cracked ends and started squaring the piece. It turned out that I was able to salvage one pen blank from it. Love this West Tx mesquite wood. Pen has a CA finish.

Great looking pen!
I also love Mesquite and have made many pens from it.
BUT, I developed a scary reaction to the sanding dust from it after a while.
Be sure to use adequate dust collection and a respirator with this, and many woods!
