I had a request for two of the 50 cal. bullet pens from the same person.
They finally convinced me to use the real bullets to make them. They are going to be personal pens, so there isn't the concern of the lead issue.

I feel bad that I am going to have to tell him that, it isn't going to happen. I was working on one of them, trying to drill it. I found out that there is a hardened steel core and I cannot drill it. I dulled several drill bits in an attempt and didn't even scratch it.

I will present him with his options and see where we go from here.

You need to buy tracer rounds. Drill out the tracer powder and then melt out the lead. Really easy.

Thanks for the information. I only have what he gave me, but I will mention this to him and see if that's the way he wants to go. Where do you recommend purchasing tracer rounds from?

Hmmmm not sure in the US I get mine from a guy on Canadiangunnutz.com.
I am sure he wouldn't mind as you can't tell the difference from the tracers from a armour piercing one.

Why not just turn down some aluminum rod into bullets?

Midwayusa.com

Cheaperthandirt.com

Both are good places to start looking for reloading components.

Profirearms in Indy can also help.

I have no trouble drilling out my ball 50cal bullets. Are you drilling them on you lathe using a collet?
I'd be willing to drill the for you if you want. PM me if interested.

Actually you can tell the difference by the color of the tip. There are several bullets you can use but you're not going to drill through the steel penetrator in an armor piercing or armor piercing incendiary round . This should help you identify what the color tip means.

MY BULLET -Cartridge Identification Specifications

These for whatever reason, don't have the colored tip. I was told they were lead, but it is very hard steel. I can only assume they are the armor piercing.

Thanks for the offer. I believe what you have, either has the lead core or solid copper.

I did find solid copper 50 cal., but I only need two and the box is a twenty count. I have already gave the cost for the pens, so I can purchase a lot of extra pieces. I told him about the problem and he doesn't want to spend the extra.

I was able to remove the steel core with a little distortion to the jacket. I will see if I can make it work before I try other options.

Thanks for the help.

Mine definitely have a sold metal core, not copper. If you don't have any more, PM me your address and I'll send you two drilled out.
