My second child was born today. She is so precious! Even more precious than my woodshop... I have a desire to make something for her preferably on the lathe.
Are there any good items for babies that can be made? Or for toddlers for that matter as my son is 2.5?

I've only been turning for a year, completely "self-taught" by YouTube and this forum. I've only been turning pens, seam ripper, and bottle stoppers. All small kit stuff. It's time to explore other realms! Woodturning!

7 pounds 14 ounces!
Very healthy!

Congratulations to you and, Mom! One of the greater joys in life. I've read about some who've made baby rattlers. Do a google search and, you may find the instructions. Choose your wood carefully.

Congratulations!!!! I am sure you will come up with the perfect gift. If you are like me you will come up with several over the next few weeks. Good luck.

Congratulations. I have no idea what a newborn needs that can be made on a lathe that she wouldnt hit herself with. You might make wheels and simple small block wood cars and trucks for your toddler.

Congrats!!!!

I wanted to do the same thing when my daughter was born two years ago. Instead of toys she plays with I make her a special Christmas ornament that sits on the mantle each year. I'll make her toys when she gets a bit older.

Nick Cook has a nice article on a baby rattle that might be a good place to start. Nick includes a good discussion on toy safety.

For a toddler on the Richard Raffan book on making toys is excellent.

CONGRATS ON THE NEW ONE FROM A GRANDPA.

Way to go...!:wink::biggrin:

She's beautiful, you are a lucky man, twice...!

Congrats to you and your wife, I hope you can get some sleep for the next few months...!:redface:

Cheers

WOO-HOO !!!!!!!

Seeing your child born is the single most awe inspiring event you can witness in this world. You are a blessed man!!

Also, being witness to this event makes a man realize that women are tougher than men.

Congratulations, on the new one. Baby Rattle a member of our group makes them and they are a special gift. Just be careful with what you use as a finish. As you know a baby puts everything in their mouth.

Saying that. there is only one better feeling then holding your child. That is when she gives you a grandchild ! Any grand dad on here can tell you that when you hold your grand baby it is like nothing else you will ever feel.

Brings back memories. My daughter is 30, I was in the delivery room when she was born...I remember it like it was yesterday. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I would make a mobile to hang above the crib for the newborn. For your son, you might try your hand at making toy cars, trucks, planes, etc... Both of these projects can incorporate turned parts. Have fun whatever you do.

Truly a Blessed event that you will forever cherish, yes, through thick and thin as with your wife. Congrat!....Jan
