Cocoa Beach, Fl, USA.
We in Florida and the east coast of the USA need prayers for safety from this very strong and large storm . My wife and I ( and two cats ) are evacuating tomorrow morning from the Cocoa Beach area to Lakeland, Florida . Many of the folks here are either staying or leaving on Thursday . A huge traffic jam will probably occur because there are only a few outlet highways from the beach. The house and boat and truck are all secured as best as possible....no room in my car for woodworking tools or wood !! They are all replaceable . Hope to return on Sat.

I am glad you are taking precautions Joe! Several days ago it looked better, but recently it has steered closer to the coast.

Please keep us informed of your situation.
 
Yes heed the warnings. This is no time to be a hero. One serious storm coming ashore. All the best and be safe.
 
Good luck, Joe! I was on a telecon this morning with some people from KSC and they are battening down the hatches. Be safe!

You are good to go early. I lived in Florida for a few years, and was ALMOST caught in the stopped evac traffic. Not a good place to be, when the tornados are being spun off of the main storm, right where you are at a dead stop on the highway. You are just THERE! Can't go forward due to stopped traffic, and cannot go back into the face of a major hurricane. :mad::mad::eek:
 
Oh boy...! this weather system around the world is going mad, my neck of the woods has just recently been battered with some very nasty storm that has put half of the east coast area under water and while we missed the worse of it, many other did not but I know how it feels being trapped in the middle of some horrendous weather so, I hope you and all your family will be OK and safe and that, you are not going to suffer any damage at your place...!

We are thinking about you Ann. Hopefully the storm will stay more offshore.
We are concerned about our place in Titusville and thankful we are in MI.
 
Glad to see you are getting out of the path, it is definitely no fun to ride out a hurricane. Been there done that 1983 in Texas, eye of the storm passed right over my house at the time, would never do it again. The only reason I opted to stay was being caught in a massive 8 hr traffic jam trying to get out for a storm that never came 2 years earlier. Hoping for the best for all in it's path.
 
Joe You will be right next door. I am in Winter Haven and it shouldn't be too bad here although we are expecting TS winds as long as it doesn't make land fall. My brother is in the Coco beach area and has decided to ride it out.

I pray that all will be good. Took the day off tomorrow to batten down the hatches...we all remember Charlie!
 
Hope everyone is safe. We've been following the news reports and it looks pretty bad. Let us know you are OK when you can.
 
We returned safely yesterday to find only minor damage to the house . However my 4 trunk seagrape tree was down in the front yard .....planted them about 30 years ago. So today my yardman is working with the chain saw. I have LOTS OF SEAGRAPE wood !!! Anyone need any ? Some other homes in our neighborhood did not fair as well, with trees falling right through the roof. The storm center passed us about 20 miles offshore , so we did not get the real high winds ...and very little rain and min flooding. Thanks for all your prayers .

Glad you came out of that with minor damage and everyone is safe. Fortunate that it fell away from your house. That is alot of pen blanks there. That storm will be talked about for a long time. Just the way it ran in a path is weird. It was and still is being an expensive storm. So much damage and loss of life. Take care.

Anyone have any experience working with Royal Poinciana wood ? There is a rather large tree down ( 3 foot dia at the base and 50 feet long ) in our neighborhood . Stump still in the ground . THe grain is fine with white sapwood and dark golden brown heartwood. Very heavy stuff !!! Anyone need any wood ....let me know ........tons of all kinds in the area. We woodworkers NEVER have enough wood :mad::tongue::eek::cool::island:

Herb, if you want to carry wood back home, you should consider driving a car to Florida !!!

I know that it makes very pretty pen blanks. If I was closer, I would try to come down and get some of the big stuff for bowls. However, it is an 8 hour drive one way to get there from Atlanta.
 
Here are two pictures of pieces of the Royal Poinciana wood. Anyone have any experience turning this wood ? Looks like it would make a good pen blank.I am willing to share a small flat rate box of the wood with my friends here on IAP FREE ! for the first box ....you just pay the shipping of $6.80 within USA. Same offer for the sea grape wood.Happy to do it. There are tons of wood here from the storm. :angry::confused::cool::cool::smile::mad:

Mother nature is powerful and chooses no targets, storms are scary and potentially deadly but after the dust settled, woodworkers can salvage hundreds of tons of woods from those trees blown away.

Trees that have fallen into houses, cars and other sorts of buildings, do require calculated and specialized removing but after that, emergency services are most willing to let you have as much wood as you want, after transferred to a safe location, the only thing you need to do is, ask...!

Many of the trees that have fallen, did so because of their size and age, these are the trees that one should give particular attention and salvage as much as they can, these woods have normally great grains and colours.

An then are those trees, large shrubs that we go by time after time and wished they were dead or in need of removal, as you can't touch them however, and with some luck, some of those admired treasures are now at your reach with the right permissions, off-course and that is a bonus that one don't get often in a lifetime, I got a couple so, I know how it feels...!

Be careful around chainsaws...!

What about the two stumps / roots that are out of the ground and curbside ? What might I find if I start chain sawing into those ? Pickup of all the branches and logs has started in our area, so my stuff might be gone soon. FEMA has contracted the job and is paying $1000 per truckload !! Last big storm, the stuff was all ground up with chippers and loaded on a ship in Port Canaveral that traveled to Italy for use in their power plants. This cleanup will take weeks.
 
So still somewhat a rookie on this so I have a possible dumb question. If I were to get some of this, how long would I have to wait for it to be dry enough to turn? I know there are variables involved but just a general timeframe.
