Hi all. My grandson turned a very nice pen but the tip was damaged in assembly. How would remove it? Pliers? Hi all.

Assuming you haven't already installed the twist mechanism, use a transfer punch or sacrifice an old drill bit and drive it out from the opposite end. Firm, repeated taps are better than a mighty whack.

If you've installed the twist mechanism, and assuming it's a 7 mm twist mechanism, a 1/8" transfer punch fits in the hole of the twist mechanism. Same as above... firm, repeated taps.

Looks like some chipping occurred at the end of the barrel that might need attention.

Adding: I don't have a disassembly setup but I wrap the blank with a piece of bike inner tube. Grip tight and hit the transfer pin with a hammer. Also, when doing this, I hold the pen over a terry towel to catch the parts. Saves crawling on the floor to find parts which gravitate under anything in the shop.

I will add a tiny detail. If the twist mechanism has been installed, tap out the tip, then tap the transmission out too with a larger transfer punch. Press in the new tip, then press in the transmission.

Hi - I have disassembled many a pen for a variety of reasons. Penn State Industries sells a pen disassembly set. Worth whatever they charge for it. You find the size that just fits the barrel and then bang the rod against something like the anvil on a vice. A few good hits and the pieces pop out.
