Howdy!
I haven't been on here much lately as my job has kept me busy. It's also kept me from doing much pen turning. Anyway, I now work at a restored Shaker village (Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill | Kentucky Hotels Lodging & Inn At Shaker Village | Pleasant Hill KY) as a history interpreter. More and more, I find myself working in the broom shop making a variety of brooms, or else demonstrating in the wood-working shop. It's great because they've been teaching me to use a lot of hand tools, and I'm constantly getting to try new small projects such as large spoons, laundry forks, etc. I even made a small broom handle on our treadle-lathe. I am now much more thankful for my Delta Midi.
Anyway, I'd like to start acquiring some of my own tools as many of the ones supplied by the village are not in the best shape after years of wear and tear. I spend lots of quality time on a shaving horse using spokeshaves and a drawknife. I've been looking for a drawknife and a hand drill (especially double pinion) on ebay, but it's hard to tell which ones are decent quality. Plus, I can't spend much money on tools at the moment. Any suggestions of other places to look? Or just words of wisdom for someone new to doing everything without power tools? I work with some great guys, but it's always to get other opinions.
Thanks much!

You can get some good deals on Craigslist around here. Look in the Cincinnati, Columbus, Chillicothe areas. Might be a ways to drive but you can pick up some quality Amish hand tools pretty reasonable.

I'm not sure if it's still around, but see if the Galoots on the Old Tools list are still around. Many moons ago they would have an FMM "Flea Market Monday" where one could buy all sorts of wondrous old tools.

Still around --- back to having tools for sale on Monday and some have periodic lists of for sale

wellThanks for all the suggestions. Someone also PM'd me a great website that has some good stuff on it. The sad part about this area of the state is that what I do find is typically grossly over-priced. Now to keep saving my pennies for all the things I'd like to buy :-)
And it is a dream job. Doesn't pay much, but I got to spend most of my day in the wood shop and the last two hours making brooms (more correctly one and a half, but who's counting).
