How To Design A Logo

I've done logos for over 20 years. Along with label design and desktop publishing.

The design phase is just brainstorming. Decide 'basically' what you'd like, then work up some variations. A little thing like a thinner line or just barely moving an element can make all the difference.

Once you have your layout, it's time to finalize and, in this case, convert to a digital format (now, in my day, everything was done by rapidograph {pen}, ink and a straight edge..the secret was to make it BIG. Shrinking artwork cleans it up. If you want a 3" logo, do the best 3' rendering that you can, and photostat it down).

Best bet is to draw out designs and have someone with illustrator experience turn it into a nice digital file. .png & .wmf are my favorites, with a high-res .jpg for some instances.

Once he returns your logo, if it's not exactly what you want, say so and suggest changes. You wont hurt our feelings. A good artist wants to give you exactly what you want. It usually takes multiple attempts.

If you want any help from me, just send me a mail.

Good luck.

I used a free program called inkscape. It was easy to use and I was able to draw out what I had in my head. The program is similar to adobe illustrator.

If I were you I would scetch out what you are thinking on paper before wasting time designing something on a computer when you don't know what you want for sure.

Once I had a first copy, i posted it on the forum and got some great feedback.

The best logos are simple, can work well in black and white, and can be reduced very small without losing the intent. Think of the Apple logo or the IBM letters or the lowercase HP in the circle. Those are great logos done by high horsepower design firms.

Use the screen resolution as a guide; if you scale the logo to be around a quarter inch tall on your screen and can still tell exactly what it is, you have done well.

Getting started for me seems to be the hardest thing to do. I wish I could give you some ideas but my mind is blank. Every time I click refresh it say's "runtime error":confused:
