I am going to make another Antler/Ice-Age pen, and my first antler, I used a polish finish. Now what would you reccomend for the Ice-Age/Antler? Also, what's the different between wax/polish, Acrylic Polish, and CA?And how do you do a CA finish? Does it work onj Acrylic?New to this, any advice will help! Thanks!

You asked for about about 50 pages worth of info there. To keep this short, do a search for CA finish and you will get more info than you can read in one sitting. I know that did not DIRECTLY answer you, but it is a much better alternative than reading through a long winded reply that would simply be MY interpretation of things.

CA/ super glue will need some/ a lot of practice before putting on a (good pen) it does work on acrylics. the other 2 are for shining a finished pen blanks and or removing tiny scratches.

I am newer to CA as well. First thing no need for CA on plastic blanks, just MM to 12,000 and Plastic polish. I would go to you tube search for Russ Fairfield, you will learn a ton of good stuff. It would have saved me many times over had I know that before starting CA...Good luck and don't become frustrated. Each wood seems to act differently depending on moisture so it will take a while for consistency. There will be many times of starting over, but a great way to learn.

antler

Dan..........

For what it's worth, I seldom put a finish on an antler/bone pen. If the antler is real pithy and has a lot of pores, I will use CA. 1 or 2 Medium coats, sand to 1200 and start with the Micro Mesh. Take your time with the MM, and don't get the antler too hot, as i have had them crack when assembling. Above all, don't use the old automotive 'black sandpaper as in wet sanding. It will impart a darkness to the pores of the turning that is hard to remove. If a piece of antler gets dark because of sanding, I use a product called 'Goop' remover. You can wash the turning with this product, but don't use over CA or Acrylic. IT WILL ATTACK

There are some good videos on CA and CA/BLO finishing on You Tube also. I always find the videos easier to learn from than reading.
