If ine wanted to make pens out of soapstone, how many pens could be made out of 10 lbs of soapstone?
Would they wash away in the shower?

Soap stone can vary a bit depending on the variety you get, but for estimating it is about 180# per cubic foot. runs between a 4 and 5 on the Mohs softness scale. its realy easy to work and polish. it comes in colors from deep dark green to light desert tan, and everything in between.

Dick got some nice usable pieces. it really makes a difference of who you buy from. A lot of it is sold for sculpture carving so it has raw ruff edges. I cut mine with and old camp bow saw. as with all stone working WARE A RESPORATOR !! and watch out you keep the dust cleaned up... its hell on motors.

I found this on the web from a counter-top company that specializes in soapstone counter-tops.

Durability
In fact, many of the soapstone sinks we restore are at least 100 years old and often all that is left of the house they were in. Soapstone is remarkably dense, even more so than granite. This density makes it incredibly heavy. At 1 ¼" thickness (standard countertop) soapstone weighs approximately 22 lbs a square foot.

Hummmm..... I wonder if you could get scrap pieces and cut-offs????

I buy the scrap grab boxes. I usually get more than enough for a couple dozen pens, with some good chunks for other projects.

How many pens you get will depend on how it's cut, or how much of a slave to matching the cap to barrel you are.

The last batch of alabaster I bought came with some core drilled pieces... Nice cylinders. Easy to work for bowls and such.

Bought a block at Hobby Lobby..Don't recall the price..thinkin $9 for a 2.3"x2.5"x6". Looked great up until I dropped the blank on the concrete floor..
