I started on dial up at 300 bps on a regular residential telephone line. That service was provided over a single cable containing four wires, one pair for voice and one pair for dialup internet. The service was provided in the small gray box in the following photo:
Over time a few additional phone lines were added including DSL. After about thirty lines the phone company decided to install a 100 pair cable. That service provided about 1 mb internet speed and was contained in two larger boxes attached to my house.
Last week FIOS (fiber optic) service was installed. This service is providing internt service at 43 MB download and 30 MB upload plus our TV service. The FIOS network box is next to the electric meter.
Here is a Youtube vid with a speed test. I used my old provider speed test by a good one to use if you would like to check your speed is http://speedtest.com
