I gotta agree that the amboyna is stunning... but have to wonder when the price of those fancy rocking chairs is going to start coming down... and come down A LOT. There are sooooooo many people building them now that really the only thing that sets any particular one apart from the masses is material and finish.

Used exotic wood but not quite a Sam Maloof chair yet.

Correct... not a Maloof... but maybe better. [:0]

I've never sat in a chair that Mr Sam actually made, but I've sat in several 'copies'... and I've sat in copies of the Hal Taylor chair (like the amboyna chair pictured). The Taylor chair is much more comfortable to me, probably because of the flexible back splats. They're both very artsy, and I suspect Mr Sam would agree that the amboyna chair is incredible... whoever made it.

Being from San Antonio, you've probably seen several Maloof/Hensarling copies at shows in this area. You'll see the occasional Taylor copy. Sit in one next time and see if you don't agree. Gary Weeks also makes a very nice chair, which I also prefer to the Maloof and/or Hensarling style.

Better? I strongly doubt it. [;)]

I love that figure but I think that that much in one place is over powering. For me at least the figure of the wood takes away from the form of the chair.

I would love to see his scrap bin[:D]
