My husband just asked me how long these kits have been available to hobbiests. Since I am new to turning, I have no idea of the history of the pen turning art.

"Ballpark" is early 1990's. I started in 95ish and there were very few. Best source at the time was "Woodworkers Store" (now Rockler). They had a wide variety of slimlines, the comfort and the Euro and Flat top. A veritable plethora!!

Man Ed, you must be old....(like me)..

I bought some pen kits (and dart kits) from Woodworkers Store around 1991 or 92.

I BELIEVE the cigar came out in mid 90's.

It still has the number "WCO145" That was woodcrafters of Oklahoma--a one man operation that had that pem made. I bought from him directly a couple times.

When was IAP formed?
Look at Jeff Brown's (Jeff) "join date":biggrin:
(12/5/2003)

Also "Scott" was his founding partner
(12-12-2003)

Which implies that Jeff talked to himself:eek::eek::eek: for a week, before he opened it up for "additional comments":biggrin:

Yeah, Jeff and I had been talking about forming a new penturning group on the Internet since the fall of 2003, when we had a discussion about it at the Yahoo Penturners Group. I had made the audacious suggestion that we form an actual association independent of Yahoo. I was, of course, shouted down because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Shortly thereafter I got an E-Mail from Jeff saying why don't we just do it. I'm sure glad that somebody who knew what they were doing (Jeff) stepped up, because I sure never could have pulled it off myself. He is the real genius behind the IAP!

Anyway, back to the original question, I think Berea and Steebar were selling kits as early as the mid-80's.

Scott.

I have sent a note asking Jim at Berea to give a little input--but it's Friday night---we'll see, but he could tell us a lot about the "early days"

From Dayacom site:

Welcome to Dayacom, a premier supplier of pen making kits and
stationary supplies since 1987.

So there where some at that date.

They also state that they are working with CSUSA since 1989

It seems to me that I was getting catalogs from PSI long before I ever turned a pen. maybe as much as 20 years ago. maybe a little more than that. That would also put it in the area of mid 80's maybe.

Don't be intimidated!!! Scott is no different from any other "run of the mill" world-class pen turner.

(I've also come to learn he is a world-class Gentleman!!)

I have to agree! He wrote me a very nice thank you note for my pen.
I have learned so much from the people here. I know I certainly couldn't be doing the level of work I am if it weren't for all the help I've had from the IAP members.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you.

I found this thread in the archives

With this quote

Looking through Kip Christensen and Rex Burningham's book it relates that around 1989 Craft Supplies in UK introduced one of the first pen kits, and in 1990 one was introduced by Craft Supplies in the US.

Looking at Tom Hutchinson's book he relates he developed Hut Wood Finish in 1982 (I realize not the penturner's favored finish---but, used by a lot of us in the early days). He started HUT Products in 1991. It also relates that his son David operated a Houston, Texas facility where Dymondwood and other pen blanks were produced.

Ed,

You always seem to be able to point out the insanity of it all.

LoL

I firmly believe in trying to find the humorous side of life.
