Historic Route 66 Pen

Here is yet another pen I crafted from pinewood salvaged from the former De Anza Motor Lodge on historic Route 66 in Albuquerque, NM. The De Anza was built in 1939.

After turning on the lathe, the top of the pen was dyed, dried overnight, covered with CA, and sanded to a shine.

The bottom of the pen was covered with boiled linseed oil. I used the same procedure above for a shine.

The Historic Route 66 pen cap is from a long sleeve shirt button.

This is a really cool pen and concept. I love the re-purposing of the shirt button as the finial. I remember driving parts of old Route 66 as a kid when we drove from our home in Chicago to visit my aunt in Phoenix. The road had been long closed by the time we took that trip in the early 90s.
