His and Hers in mystery wood

A co-worker wanted me to make a pen for his wife out of what was her favorite tree for her birthday. He'd had the piece in his garage for about 6 years, so it was well dried, but had a lot of checks. The pieces below are pulled from the heartwood, with a little figure since it was a small crotch piece of wood. It had some beautiful grain, but this is what I got working around the cracks. There's some pics of the wood if anyone is able to ID it. We think that it is most likely dogwood as the tree did flower. He didn't have pictures or remember the shape of the tree or what the leaves looked like.

I love the contrast of the gunmetal with both the wood and the gold accents (It's my favorite kit finish combo) The "hers" pen is a PSI Classic Elite II. His is a Diamond Knurl.

morning to you . I would have said some sort of walnut looking at the colours and heart to sapwood difference but surely he would know if it had nuts etc?
