New to the craft, hoping to learn by lurking for a while. A couple of months ago I joined a wood working club in my community and took an "overview" class, creating a pen as part of the class. The club has a lot of the major tools (table saws, bench saws, drill presses, and a lathe room that includes two mini-lathes, used primarily for pen turning). I have acquired most of the needed beginner's personal tools and decided to start out by making 10 Gatsbys, and the project is under way. I'm looking forward to learning from this group and sharing when appropriate.

The woodworkers is the icing on the cake! Good luck with your new hobby. Many people start with Slimline pens but I'm in agreement with others that a single blank kit is easier. There are some books on modifying the Slimline pens.
