Hi all,

I'm Wes from Tampa, FL. I just started turning pens in the last couple of weeks and was pleased to find the forums here, you seem like a very helpful crowd. I am a patternmaker in an aluminum foundry and have been machining to at least some extent since I was 9 or 10, but haven't used a wood lathe until this week when I bought a Shopfox 1704, the 8 foot long metal lathe I used for my first couple pens seemed like overkill. Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself.

Wes

Hi Wes the first lathe I used was a 17 inch LeBlond then I stepped down to a 13 inch Clausing Hydra drive LOL, Now I have 3 wood lathes on 10x14 steel city one 12x33-1/2 harbor freight and a new 16x42 Shop Fox I believe you will find this a fun place to hang out, lots of brains to pick and Millions of ways to spend money.
Welcome from the Tennessee Swamps.

Welcome from Manhattan, KS! I too am new and have found this website to have far better information than any of the books I purchased, so be sure to check out the library and the table of contents (pre 2009, it took me a few days before I noticed this...I could have saved myself hours had I noted this earlier).

Hi Wes,

You have my sympathies. This is the most addictive thing I've done, (and I used to drink and smoke:redface:).

Welcome from northern IL.

Welcome Wes! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with that lathe. There is a forum in IAP for "other things we make."

I'm putting a few links in here for reference –
This link has postings by different pen turners on what they wish they had known earlier:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46654

This link tells of some "out of the box" tools/aids for pen turners http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66178

This one is a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't. http://content.penturners.org/articl...9/Acronyms.pdf
