HF 115 drill bit set which one to buy?

Seen mention of the HF 115 drill bit alot on this site and was wondering which one to buy? Cobolt, Titanium Nitride,or HSS?? Which one do you use? Thanks

HSS and a drill doctor to properly get a good centered tip and evenly sharp drill bit

My experience with the Harbor Freight drill bits is that the quality is not consistent, but the bits are concentric and with a good sharpening such as provided by a drill doctor do just fine.

Those bit which are too small to fit into the drill doctor can be replaced rather than resharpened.
 
I agree with Ken, HSS, sharp, and centered. I do however have the TN set, and have never sharpened a bit in over 7 years. Watch when it goes on sale and use a 20 or 25% off coupon. Jim S

Also agree with Ken and Jim. I have been using the HSS set for about 7 years and they are still great, with the help of my Drill Doctor now and then.

I agree with the others. Get the HSS set on-sale and with a coupon for around thirty bucks. Resharpen and replace as needed.
 
One other thing you may want to consider. In order to cut an accurately sized hole as opposed to a hole that is oversize, the drill flutes must be the same length. I don't remember where I got my flute ruler, but this is one listed as General Hardware No 16.

You use it to measure the length of your drill bit flutes. They should be the same length.

Not following you here. One flute could run the entire length of the bit and the other could stop after one inch without effect... length of the flutes matters not. what does matter is distance from bit center to cutting edge (radius)... if those aren't even, you can get ovoid holes as the bit is pulled back and forth (with a perfectly stiff bit, the hole would still drill round, but all of the cutting would happen on the one flute).
 
Sorry I would go with cobalt, much harder and better for drilling other harder materials as well. I agree also get a Drill Doctor if you dont have one.
 
Really the drill doctor is more important than the drills. You can purchase the best drills made but after a while they will become dull. I use my drill doctor all the time. I do wish it could do the brad points though. I use a diamond hone to keep them going.. I will admit that I don't use HF drills at all. I usually try to purchase good drills.
