Regarding that sumac pen. The trunk I used was less than two inches diameter and was cut in February. So it did not have much time to dry out. I am hoping that the pen walls are thin enough and the friction polish application created enough heat that cracking will not be a problem. But I am going to watch it for a while just in case. Also, like I said, I had some difficulty in gettin bored holes clean enough to insert a tube into.
Let us see what you come up with. I have some privet hedge limbs I am going to try next.

Very Cool, let us know how the hedge works for you. I will be cutting up some of the larger sumac this weekend (has been in log form since last fall so it should be good and dry) I'll post my results.
