I don't know why most people don't do this, because I think it is the best way to go.
When gluing in the tubes on blanks, I use forceps. Gently grab one end of the tube, and while the tube is in the air, apply the glue in one of two small beads onto the tube. This way, you can see precisely how much glue you are using.
Then, insert the tube in, twisting it around to spread the glue, then let go of the tube and use the forceps to push the tube to proper position.
