This is where I learned everything I know about turning pens. You'll find the info you're looking for.

For an easy, foolproof wood finish, I recommend wet-sanding with wood doctors walnut oil followed by Pens Plus.

There are many, many opinions on sanding and polishing. Lots and lots of products for polishing etc. Go with what you find works best…and more expensive isn't always better. 😉

Sharpen up those tools and you won't need to worry much about sanding.
Finishing... that's another story, and you will find a lot of info and opinions on it.
My primary advice is to research and ask questions before you start spending money that you wish you hadn't spent.
