I was given a pile of the wood in rough sawn boards form over 25 years ago. I thought my uncle told me it was red oak, which I believed because the boards were red. I have been moving this around for years, final got around to turning it. But it turned very easily and gave off a powder chip, and not an oak smell. Any help would be greatly appreciated

P.S. this has Walnut oil applied

Would you believe that it looks more like walnut ? Wouldn`t expect the boards to be red though . Walnut also has a very characteristic smell . Could you give us an end grain shot , sanded to about 400 , and un-oiled face and edge grain ?

Actually, with that open grain and pores, I think your uncle was right. It looks most like Red Oak with some wood stain to enhance the red color.

I agree with Jim. It looks exactly like some antique oak furniture I have.

I can see the walnut look also but the grain looks too open for that.
