As I seem to be hoplessly "CA finish challenged", I picked up some Ren wax at Rockler.
Ae you supposed to apply and let dry, then buff, or apply and buff right away?

I can't speak for others but I don't consider Ren wax by itself for a finish... assuming you are talking about on wood. If you can't yet get the hang of CA I'd try something like Shellawax, Mylands or Enduro and put then Ren wax on after the other is good and set as a topcoat. Just MHO. :)

Agree that wax is a topcoat, final layer to protect from finger print oils. Eventually, these oils will wear through ANY finish...

So waxing on a regular basis adds protection. A member sold TSW, and a little dab did you. Rub on, let it haze and rub off. Letting wax dry is no fun removing excess...

Just ask a CSI how long finger prints last...

I keep my Ren wax right next to my photo booth. After assembling, I Windex off my mirror/plexi/whatever setup in the booth to get rid of the dust that falls on there by the minute, I wash up a little to get rid of anything that might scratch the finish, wipe a coat of Ren wax over the whole pen, hardware and all, and immediately buff it off again. By the time I get done wiping it on, I start buffing at the place I started applying, and by the time I've followed my 'trail', it's all had the 15 seconds or whatever to haze over a little. At this point, I'm handling the pen with kid gloves and the cloth I used to buff it with.

I then place it for photos, lightly blow off the dust and crap that has accumulated on the mirror in the two minutes it took me to wax the darn thing. Click click click, and then to the computer for editing photos as needed. I then head back to the shop to start the next project, following the same steps above. In the meantime, the light heat from my photo booth lights has helped to solidify the Ren, and I move the original pen to the holding area - basically, the pile on the table that I need to get put in boxes and get listed on the website for sale.

Ren wax is amazing, but I don't use it so much as a finishing step. To me, it's more the first step in the maintenance process of the pen.

I really like the kits that someone was selling on here - basically a soft cloth and a little tiny thing of Ren wax to include with the pen as a 'care and feeding' package. That's a great idea to add value to a sale, I just haven't gotten around to building/buying any of those kits.

Hope this helps! :)

TSP?! hehe...I really hope you meant TSW, and not Tri-sodium phosphate. That might put a little stress on the finish if you used that as a wax. heh

I just use a wax, like Hut's PPP - I will use Ren Wax as a final finish but it's just as an added layer of protection. Don't get too hung up on a CA/BLO finish anyway, pens looks great without it and it while it looks great on some wood, if you try to put it on an oily wood, like cocobolo, it doesn't seem to stick well and for me, normally looks bad.
