What type of finish do people normally apply to homemade tool handles? Some sources say to use an oil or nothing at all while other say to use a lacquer finish and im wondering which is the best option.

Thanks again,
Garrett

When I make a knife, I use Tung Oil. I was told that the benefit is that if you scratch it, you can rub additional oil in and remove the evidence. With a traditional finish, a scratch means having to sand down and possibly start over. Fortunately I have not scratched any handles so far so I don't know more about repairing the Tung Oil finish. Hope this is of some help.

I made my first screwdriver over 45 years ago and have tried about everything there is out there since, but I kept coming back to Danish oil. It protects the wood and it still feels like a tool.

Any good drying oil finish. Protects the wood, leaves the natural feeling of the handle and makes it easy to get a hold on. Tried paint, lacquer, raw, motor oil (machinist shop) still prefer BLO.

I build period muzzle loaders. When I has starting out built mare than a few custom file & chisel handles I have some issues with my right hand. I finished those the same way as the stocks with thinned BLO & built the finish up. These were built early 90's finish is still as good as when I put it on. I do the same on my lathe chisels.

I've used this on 2 handles that I've turned.

So far, it's standing up very well!

Has anyone ever tried CCL knife handle finish?

I'm looking for a durable finish that'll provide some shine but overall it needs to pop the grain and have no issues with the metal inlay sheets I segmented into the handle.
