So I ordered PSI's ice cream disher/scoop to make as a Christmas gift for my fiance's parents. I have an alumilite blank that I cast for the handle. What I need help with is attaching the turned handle to the scoop.

The scoop has one inch of 1/4"-28 threads to attach to. I don't want to just epoxy the handle onto the threads. I'd like them to be able to simply unscrew the handle to wash the scoop. If I just drill and tap the resin itself, do you think that will be strong enough to handle the stress of scooping? Ideally I'd like to use a threaded insert, but I can't seem to find any that are 1/4"-28 fine thread. Any that I do find are very expensive and only come in a pack of like 10 to 20 inserts.

I would use an insert - need to find a hardware store with draws of selections instead of pre-packaged so you can only buy 1. My local ACE is my go to for that.

Strength at the end due to the pressure of scooping is a real thing to think about. What about a metal accent outside like you would use on a turning chisel handle - copper pipe is what I use but you might even get away with some aluminum. The metal can be long enough to give you some strength and hide any of the drilling for the handle tap.

Many options and ideas posted here. I hate fine threads as they are hard to find inserts, etc. My screw and bolt cans are full of them and never use them. IMO, one needs multiple scoops or a bigger scoop. For ice cream scoops, they are dipped in room temp water after each dip to keep the ice cream from sticking and the thumb action is bent.

Like posted above, I'd check the local hardware store. I liked that scoop also but didn't like the small thread size. I ended up buying I usual this scoop and haven't had any regrets…
It threads in the bottle stopper inserts for easy removal for cleaning. https://exoticblanks.com/products/t...r-chuck-4-pack?_pos=1&_psq=Bsert&_ss=e&_v=1.0
It's made of stainless steel so theres no plating issues and it's shallow enough that the ice cream falls out easily. Never had an issue with them.
