I was polishing some casings on my Jet mini using a single buffing wheel tonight when something (that I assume is bad) happened. While buffing a casing the lathe stopped, motor humming but not spinning. As soon as I took the pressure off it started spinning again. I turned it off and on a couple of times and to my dismay I coule stop the lathe by hand. The motor was hot so I am going to let it cool off then try again tomorrow.

Has anyone had this happen? Do you think that my motor is going out?

Sounds like someone getting ready to buy a motor.

Mother in law pool pump did the same thing. Run for awhile and get hot then locks up. Cools off and runs fine till it gets hot.
replaced it under warranty.Figured it was the bearings.

If your lathe is less than two years old, it is still under warranty and the first thing you should do is call JET. Note: I think the newer JETS have an even longer warrantee??

All motors generate heat, some more than others. They are doing work......physics requires it. Most likely, not a problem.

If the motor will start and run without a load if you spin it by hand, it is the start capacitor that has gone bad. It is the electronic component under the hump on the motor.....this assuming you have a non-VS model. The "START" capacitor is an easily replaceable item and they are available for less than $10. Call your local motor shop. Radio Shack might even have them.

If you have the VS model, you probably have bigger issues.
