Mark , perhaps I should explain my box elder diagnosis . The red colour frequently seen in it is caused by a species of fusarium fungus which seems to only affect box elder trees . None of the other maples and neither California or Ohio buckeye or their horse chestnut cousin get that colour , at least I have never seen a picture on this forum or any website of it in those species . That said , the two outer pieces could well be California buckeye , IF they do not have any red in them . California buckeye was my first thought , until I saw the red .
