on how to drill out that golf club pen holder that was posted
a while ago. I'm having a heck of a time trying it.

Here is the link to the original thread. Why don't you email the guy who came up with the original concept? Who else could give you better advice??

The guy has just made a post within the last couple of days so he is still around. Maybe he took off on a 4th of July vacation......be patient and maybe you will get a reply in a few days??

And in the meantime, give us something to chew on......do you have a drill press or do you plan to do this with a hand-held drill?? And for my personal edification, I assume you are trying do drill out the remnants of the shaft(steel, I would guess) and then enlarge the hole enough to accept the hardware necessary to hold the pen??

You got the facts exact,,,,,,,, drill press yes and hand drill "electric" and yes drill out the remnants to fit
my favorite pen El Grande.........

Here is my quick and dirty thought. After thinking about it for a while, I may come up with a better idea?? If the instructions are a little fuzzy don't hesitate to ask for better details.

1. Attach the club head to a wooden base that can be clamped to your drill press table. I would do this by driving 3 o 4 long wood screws through the base and into the bottom of the club head. You will need to remove the weight on the bottom of the club head so you can pre-drill pilot holes into the club head or you may split it. After the project is complete, the weight will cover up the pilot holes so no one can see them!!

2. Find the largest drill bit that will slip into the part of the shaft that is in the head of the club and chuck it in the drill press.

3. Slip the club head/base onto the drill bit and hold it there with your third hand.[:D][:D](Those little bungee cords with hooks on each end work wonderfully well for things like this!!)

4. With your other two hands, adjust the tilt, height and rotation of the DP table so you can clamp the base to the table with the head in the existing orientation.

5. After the base is firmly clamped, remove the drill bit from the chuck and change to one of the correct size. I would probably not try to drill the hole to final size; but rather drill it several times using successively larger bits each time. (Note: It will be easier to change out drill bits if you extend the quill and lock it in a down position when setting up the original orientation.)

If the above is a little fuzzy, my apologies; but I hope there is enough here to get you strarted in the right direction. There are most certainly other ways to accomplish your task and mine may not be the best or the easiest; but maybe it will turn a light bulb and help you solve your dilemma.

Richard I sent you pictures on how I do it and I will post them here also. First off don't try to drill out the shaft until you have removed the shaft. On the back of the club there is a screw the goes through the shaft. Remove this carefully as it is a very small phillips and the head will strip. As in the first picture I had to file a slot in the scre to remove. Next put the shaft in a vise and twist the head off of the shaft. It is expoxied in and will take some force but will come out. Now you have a golf club head with a hole. The next thing to do is measure the reciver of the pen kit you are going to use with a caliper. Now take the calipers to the club and mark this measurment and cut off the top of the shaft opening to this measurment. Now use the proper drill bit for the kit and ream out the hole. Glue the reciver into the hole and you hav made a golf pen holder. Any pen that uses that reciver can now be used.Hope this helps.

Thanks Roy. After I saw the posting of the club pen holder it has been on my mind. Might be something to get into the Golf stores for sale. Wishful thinking. Anyway good luck Richard with the abundance of knowledge that we have here on this site and the fact that they are extremely helpful makes this a GREAT site to be a part of.[:D]

So let me ask this....about that...what did you use dress out the hole and have something for the pen to rest in?
