Greetings from MN.

I have been working with wood on and off since I can remember. The first project I remember was a set of bookshelves that I helped my father with. They flanked our fireplace and were connected with a mantel. I always wanted to get into turning wood, and I finally bought a lathe a year ago.

My "real job" is in information security. I would love to be able to make this my retirement program in a few years. It is much more relaxing :). I have have moderate success making more than 60 pens over the last year and selling several online. But I am not able to make a reasonable margin on my work, and I'm still am not happy with fit and finish, especially when I don't take my time. I want to take that next step so that when I create a pen, it is my work of art, and truly a writing instrument rather than a novelty. I'm hoping to learn more about the craft (and patience) by reading, sharing, and trying new ideas.

I have a Shopify website I set up last month - I have yet to get a sale on that. I also have an Etsy site and an Ebay store. I have sold product on both of those channels.

Hi Craig !! . Welcome to IAP !!

Sorry that I can't help you with "that next step", as you put it. . Your pens above look quite nice. . They are all made from PSI kits. . Have you tried any kits from other sources ? . I would suggest that you give consideration to doing that. . If you want to stay with PSI, then my opinion is that their most marketable designs are these three: 30 Caliber Bolt Action; Duraclick EDC; and, Everyday Classic. . But there are many other designs from other vendors that would be worth trying also. . Just a thought. . Have a look at ExoticBlanks.com and BearToothWoods.com.

I think you are quite interested in marketing your handiwork. . I have to admit that I don't have that kind of experience to pass along to you.
Actually, that is not a subject which is actively discussed openly on this website. . Maybe you can get some discussion of that going ! :)

Welcome from Montana Craig. Something I learned a long time ago was that I'm my own worst critic on things I make. I see all the little flaws that no one else ever sees and what I view as not so good, others love. Don't be so hard on yourself, what you have shown above looks very nice and I don't see any problems with them. And remember, practice makes perfect.

Welcome from SE TN. Curious- what is the kit and blanks for the photo of the four pens? Are they pens? Noticed the threaded ends which threw me a bit. BTW, nice work and good luck in marketing and selling.
