Good Afternoon everyone, I started turning 2 weeks ago at the age of 42. Prior to that I had never used a lathe before just did general woodworking every so often. I just learned YouTube videos and my mistakes. Since then I have made 2 bowls, 20+ pens, hair pins for my wife and a seam ripper set. Pens is what I enjoy making the most. I would like to do kitless pens as I am also a fountain pen enthusiest but for now I try to make a pen a day concentrating on quality and trial and error. I have dipped my toes in modifying kits. My first attempt on a slimline I ended up getting the mechanism seized in the body. Learning from that I did a trimline that turned out much better
This was my first pen.A Gatsby grande I made from ebony wood that I got in a Kit of 60 blanks
These were Pens 8,9, and 10 made from tamarind, walnut burl, and alumilite. I also made the segmented bowl in the picture
This is the modified trimline made with alumilite and ebony wood that came from the same lot as my first pen. I used Mercury flex as the finish on this one which resulted in the jet black finish.
