What kind of heating do you use? My shop is less than 15x15 and is walled off with 4x8 sheets of foam and is by no means air-tight. I am looking for a heating solution that I can turn on and run for a bit (30min-1hour) an then come back and have my shop at least some-what warm (50 degrees or something close). If I can get it I would like a ceiling mounted system. I can if needed run 220V power to my shop. (the panel is in the same room)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have a natural gas wall mounted heater like deadhead talked about, and I have my garage pretty tight. It keeps it warm even when it gets down to 10 outside once warmed up I can keep it at 65 or so running it just a few hours a day. I had propane at my old house and it worked about the same.

My only issue with it is that being unvented it will put a lot of moisture in the air, the humidity really goes up when I run it.

There are some around here but we would have to run new lines. We built our house so we would only have electricity. For heating we have in-floor heat and a wood stove in the house. We almost put in-floor heat in the garage now we are regretting not putting it in.

Levi, i have a 9x16 insulated building, i use a radiant heater i picked up
At walmart, different settings to choose from and it keeps it comfortably in veru cold temps

I feel that I should improve my heating arrangement. I have a 14 x 24 shop that is not airtight at all. My heater is a small ceramic heater stuck beside my feet. If I go barefoot I feel a little heat off of it. :)

I bought a Mr. Heater Big Buddy and a Mr. Heater Buddy heater off of craigslist in the past couple weeks. Both were under $75. Both run off of the 1lb cans (Which are easily refillable off a larger propane tank.) Both with a hose will run off of a 20lb propane tank too. My shop is 11x11 and my breezeway (Where I cast) is 8x12. They both heat the rooms just fine. (We'll see when it hits below zero outside.) Both will hang on the wall if floor space is needed. I have the propane tank outside the rooms with the hose going through the wall.

Doug,

What size is your garage, how many did you install, and what are the wattage and voltage?
Ben

Ben,
My garage is 24' wide x 28' long. I installed (6) 6' 240V, 900w heaters in my garage. There are two on each side wall and two on the back wall. I have them run off of two separate 2-pole circuits but they are controlled by one thermostat.
I normally leave my garage at about 45 degrees all winter but if I go out there to work I will turn up the heat to 55 or so and it only thirty minutes or so to bring up the temp.
Hope this helps!

Doug,
Yes it does. My garage is 28'W X 30'L X 9'H; with 12' L walls coming from the side walls 5' off the back wall which leaves a 40" doorway leading to a "shed" area. Walls and ceiling insulated.

One more question. How much of an increase in the electric bill, if you don't mind me asking?

Ben

I don't know how much help this will be for turning but when I use my scroll saw in the winter I set a small ceramic heater in the bottom member of my dewalt 788 stand. I run it for about 30 min before I start any work by then the table is warm and I can sit and scroll with a with out a jacket or long sleeve's. I guess I give using the same heater this winter if I have my lathe by them.

Hi Ben,
I honestly never really paid attention to how much our bill went up. It was hard for me to figure out because we put an addition onto our house about the same time we built the garage. Also, I'll turn on my garage hear about the same time we turn the furnace on in our house.
Sorry I can't give you a better answer....
Doug
