Having issues making a segmented pen

Hello all I saw a tutorial by one of the Gisi brothers and I'm trying to make a scalloped pen blank. It looks like a dragon scale or a shingle pattern ( how ever you wana look at it) I'm starting with lots of uniform pieces and I cutting a 45degree angle I glue a piece on . then I roll the blank over and cut again. I think I'm doing something really wrong as I'm getting more of a candy cane spiral more than I am getting a solid blank I could turn... Am I using a wrong angle? does the 45 degree cut need to stop at the center of the blank ???? help please

Hard to say without pics or something to see what you are doing, but perhaps you are indexing the subsequent cuts off the wrong end that keeps changing length - getting shorter with each cut?
