I enjoyed a brief conversation with a customer at my sales table today. He was looking at pens for his friend, a collector. According to my customer, the grandfather of his friend used to fabricate fountain pen nibs, and had developed a "Music Nib" for writing music scores. In use, the nib was designed to flex and deposit a precise droplet of ink on the score to fill in the note. This was done by applying a bit of pressure to flex the nib. I know very little history or background for fountain pens, but this was interesting and I wanted to share here. Has anyone heard of this type of nib?

Yes, Anthony (Golden Nib) showed a dip pen nib at the Utah Woodturning Symposium that was use to write music. It was a four fingered type nib.

Good to see someone was paying attention in Utah  That is from a dip pen set. The fingers are to draw the staff line and a fine point for music notes. Very different from what is known as a music nib. Not a whole lot of companies making music nibs today. Platinum & Sailor come to mind as the most popular and are a cutom order ussually. A stub or italic nib can get by as a music nib as well. Both are broad square lines on the down stroke with a thin line on the cross stroke. Some music nibs will have two tines and two breather holes and other won't.
