I have a fever and the only prescription is... more pens!!!

I was walking by a guy's desk at work today and saw a big jar of hard candy. My first thought was that all the different colors would look awesome in a clear PR casting. So... will the candy melt during the casting? If not, would it ever go bad or whatever, sealed in the blank?

I would guess it would melt or break when turning. Nothing says you cant mix up some colored resin and pour some candy looking resin to cast in clear resin. Maybe even get some candy molds to use. (just a thought). Good luck!

I see you're really exploring the space with your blank casting. I mean really ... explore the space!

My concern with it would be keeping it from getting sticky and ruining a shirt or having the blank act as a food source for ants...

Try it, but seal it with CA to prevent bleeding. I learned this weekend at our fall meeting that powdered candy can be used as an inexpensive source for casting pigment. Seems relitive.

My concern with making pens with candy
is that people suck on the end
there for they would keep getting smaller
and smaller, til the pen is all gone :tongue: slurp, slurp

Not talking about the whole pen, just thought about casting it in a blank. Plastic beads would have a similar visual effect, but not nearly the novelty.

But just think once they were done they would need a new pen. its like money in the bank

With the Christmas Season coming, check out the bits and bobs for making the decorations. Last year there were some poly resin/plastic hard candies along with the ribbon candies at assorted craft stores.

The other problems with some of the hard candies in addition to those mentioned is some have a lot of entrapped air in them. And the color banding may not go all the way thru the candy, but only on the surface.
:clown:

Blanks already cast available from...

Some time ago I had need for a multi colored acrylic blank.

Peachtree Woodworking has them in at least two multi colored blanks.

ptreeusa.com

Go to search, pen blanks, "Carnival" and "Confetti" are multi colored.

Perhaps they will work for you.

They worked for me.

Thanks Charles. I have a Confetti and a Milky Way blank in my stock already. I am not looking for a multi-colored blank as much as I wanted to be able to say there is real candy in the pen. Sounds like it might not be such a good idea though.

David, borrowing a phrase from Nike, "Just do it!" Then, of course, let us know how it comes out. There are a lot of ways to do things that don't work but there may be one or two ways that do work. I think you could cast something like Jolly Ranchers in PR but not sure if the colors would run. Of course, that could be cool also.
