My dear spouse took a somewhat tongue-in-cheek suggestion for a birthday present seriously.

I've had my eye on this lathe ever since it first appeared in the Grizzly catalog. I thought this thing would be slightly larger than my Delta midi lathe, and I wanted something with which I can use my Cole jays on my Nova chuck. This thing is half again as large as the Delta, and when I plugged it in just to make sure it turned, it is very quiet, and seems to have loads of torque.

I need to get a stand built for it, and then perhaps will have more to add.

hey, quick question on that. Do you have to change belts to get full range of speeds, or is it all electronic controls? What is the speed range?

Lee, thanks. I may be able to use those plans, or at least incorporate some ideas from them.

James, three belt positions

Position A - 1200-4000
Position B - 600 - 2000
Position C - 300 - 1000

Happy Bithday from Lakewood WA!!
I have been looking at this one as well to repalce my Delta Midi. After you have had a chance to git it all set up and running, could you do a review on your thoughts on the lathe. I am sure others would be interested as well.
Thanks
Nick

nice looking lathe. can't wait to see what you turn out with it! i built a totally 'fly by the seat of my pants' lathe stand which works great. it's a much simpler version of the one lee posted. just start putting 2x4s together and you'll get something that'll work for you. cheers.

Congrats! It's a sweet lathe, got one for myself a while ago. Smooth, quiet, plenty of power for small to mid-size projects. All the components are sturdy, including the tool rest which I'm glad to see has a metal lever on the post setscrew, unlike my larger Grizzly lathe. Digital speed readout is more fun and usefull than I had thought it would be, and with the VS, one belt setting works for most projects. Equal or better than the VS JetMini, for a better price, IMHO.

Tony, I have a shop notes stand scanned and on my server if you want to get an idea. Simple, sturdy, and weighted.

That's a lot fancier than the stand I crabbed together for my little Jet 1014... the box on the bottom is filled with rocks for stability. It's pretty rough as a work bench, but just the right size for me to work at.

And congratulations on a great birthday gift. That's how I got into this madness... I commented to wife when I saw a mesquite bowl in an art gallery in Fredricksberg, TX that I would like to learn to do that.. beautiful bowl and I was just making a complimentary comment... I got a lathe for Christmas
