Hi, I'm preparing a Horse Chestnut burl wood pen and I want to dye it.

I haven't the equipment to double dye so I have only spirit dye.

Will I get a good finish, turning to size, dyeing then lightly sanding?

Please would you post completed pens to see what effect I could have

Thanks Andy

One method is to apply the first dye color to the blank, let it dry then, sand it back till your happy and then dye with second color, sometimes you will need multiple applications of dye to get a richer color. Allow to dry thoroughly before applying finish. Also, test everything on scrap materials to get your process and technique/finishes where you want them before applying to your good blank.

Another technique is to use an air brush to to apply the dye instead of flooding with a cloth. This way, one can achieve the color they want or create color fade from one to the other.

Post a pic when you're finished!
