My father in law has a 16" grizzly band saw and we are trying to put on a new blade. It is a 3/4" 3tpi 113" long. The problem is when we have the blade with high tension, the upper wheel is almoost a 1/4" above the top guard. Is a worn out spring the culprit or does anyone have any other ideas to look at.

May sound dumb but did you check if that is the proper length blade for that saw?
Did you actually measure the blade length?
 
We checked with Grizzly and they said it was the proper length. As for if they sold us the correct one, I don't know. We will need to measure it tomorrow. The saw is an older one and the spring is kind of rusty. I was thinking we might need to get a 112" blade, but if it is the spring after all it would not help.

Funny you should ask about the spring ... Woodworker's Journal has just run an article about bandsaw tension. According to them , bandsaw springs don't wear out. I'd suspect the blade you got, while marked 113, may have been somewhat longer than 113.

I bought a number of blades from Timberwolf for my 14" saw and one of them is too long. It does exactly the same thing as yours. I actually took a string and used it to get the length and it is 1" too long. All the rest of my bades fit fine. Hope that helps.
 
If you still have the old blade, see if it fits inside the new one. If so, the new one may be the culprit. I use the 17" (131-1/2") blades, but mine is only a year+ old, so I can't help you otherwise.

We compared the blades and the old one is 111 1/2". Grizzly has no clue why this is. They claim it will handle a 111-114" blade with no problem, but a 113" puts the wheel to high. We will go and get a 111" blade this weekend. Thanks for all the help.

I may be wrong, but if the blade tensions correctly then it would seem the spring is doing it's job. If, at that tension, the wheel is too high, it would seem the blade is too long. Hard for me to believe that a band saw has enough room for 3" difference in blade length.
 
Hang the manual and tech support, use what works [:D] My son gave me a double halogen work light for Christmas. The instructions say "use a phillips screwdriver to mount the frame to the U shaped stand". The part that I was supposed to use the screwdriver on was a plastic knob about an inch and a half in diameter. [?][V]
