Grinders. Suggestions wanted.

Over the years I have been able to avoid buying a grinder. Neighbors, clubs, and I have a Work Sharp and stones, ... So I have found ways around getting a grinder.

Now, I want to make some tools; get the steel bars and blanks and make some turning tools that do what I want them to do. So I need a grinder to work the bars and fashion what I want to make.

What suggestions are there for getting a good grinder. Is HF sufficient? I think I may need to be able to put different size wheels on the grinder to do some narrow flutes in a couple tools I plan.

Any advice will be appreciated.

If you will be grinding to shape vs sharpening then you want the largest wheel possible. A 10" wheel or larger would be adequate for most things. You can use a bench grinder with the smaller wheels but you will be limited and it will be slow going.

If you are going to be using pre-treated steels then you want to look at water cooling to keep the metal from over heating. Either dunk tank or wet grind. Wet grinders tend to run on the slow side but you can add wet to the higher speed ones.

I use an 8" grinder with a linishing (sanding) belt attachment, I start with a 40 grit, then work my way up from there, I find it doesn't over heat either.
