Just got home with a lathe. I've spent literally months trying to decide which lathe I wanted and #1 on the list was the PSI Turncrafter 10" var. speed, but there is a waiting list with stock expected mid march. Reading on these forums a few people said the HF was not too bad so today I look into that one, again. So I looked for coupons and.... BINGO.

As it turns out this lathe - 5 speed 10x18 - is on sale for $199 AND I found a coupon for 10% off. I got it for $179.

For that price if it craps out in 6 months ... no biggie, I'll just upgrade. The $179 is well spent to try out this woodturning thing and see if it's going to be a long term hobby.

Now, I did check out the alignment and it is perfect right out of the box. Haven't done anything else yet. Can't use it for ... 2 weeks until I can get tools and stuff. I'll keep you posted.

Yay.

Xander, I got the same lathe. Did you buy a service policy on it? I bought an extra 2 year policy on mine. I figured since I use about every day I might as well. Great right out of the box.

Be glad when you get your tools and start turning.

The guy on checkout ask if I was going to use it longer than 90 days. I asked why. He offered me the service policy. I told him it's a $180 lathe, if it breaks within 90 days they will get it back, after 90 days.... oh well.

It seemed that he was hinting that at day 89 I should bring it back and 'exchange' it. I get the feeling he was not expecting it to last 90 days. Says a lot about their opinion off their own products.

Might go back tomorrow and get a drill press.

Sounds like you got the 20% coupon that is in the paper every sunday. Hey they have a tool set for lathes that is not too expensive, if you want ones to just burn up/ practice sharpening.

I usenthat lathe as well for close to six months now and not a problem with it to date. Except my wife keeps.getting on it when I go out there. Man I have to hurry and get this metal lathe set up

I purchased the smaller HF lathe, the VS model for about $120. I purchased the extended warranty, although I haven't had any problems so far. I have owned it for about 15 months. I am very happy with mine.
