I can not take cerdit for the idea of doing this and I don't remember where I learned of this idea first. Anyway, the build is all of my own design..
I first made a faceplate block with some cherry and a 1" nut. Just add some lathe work and a little epoxy and you get this.
(PS, I screw it onto the lathe while it dries so that it is clamped tight. You can finish truing it once it dries)
Then I drilled a 5/8" hole with a forstner bit until it just poked out the other side in a block of MDF. (the hole on the other side is used to set your compass to draw a circle to center the face plate with) Now that I think of it, I should of drilled it on the lathe after the face plate was glued on! The I turned down some more cherry and counter bored a hole to match the CD's center hole (I think it was 37/64") I did have to turn the dowel down a hair to match, but this worked very well to true up the dowel. I also tapered the MDF just because..
The cherry "holder" slips all the way over the dowel and has a center point drilled in the tailstock end so it can be used as a press to hold the CD to the disk. Slip on your "kid damaged" CD/DVD, tighten up your press and while on a nice slow setting use your last five MM grits to remove any scratches and then wax the disk! There you have it, now your netflix DVD's can go back and still work!
