Since I have started making pens, I have been seriously abusing my credit card. I'm so obsessed that I have been buying every cool thing I see (which is everything!). Maybe I'll start going to some kind of support group. I need to get this under control or I'm going to be living out on the street with nothing but my lathe. Yikes!

The great side affect of turning. Atleast this hobby has a chance to pay for its self over time. Unlike many of the hobbies I had in the past. They just cost mony.

Stephanie ... There is a self-help group here in Georgia. We meet at the Woodcraft store ever so often. Just look for the notices here that get posted by Rojo22 as to the time and date ... or just call Woodcraft and holler "Help me" to whoever answers the telephone. IF you really want expert help ask for Phillip as he is one of the more crazed individuals at the store (tell him Fred told you that!) and you'll get more than you could ever handle.

Here is the IAP link to the Georgia chapter ... http://www.penturners.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=76

BTW, Welcome to the addiction and the Black Hole of woodturning. Where are you in GA?

HAHA...My thoughts exactly. This website has contributed to extracting lots of cash from me over the last 3 months. It opened my horizons on pen turning and expanding the possibilities. Now, need to go recoup some of that cash I so generously transferred to so many other members here.

Thanks for all the comments. I love this forum!

Fred - I'm in North West Georgia about an hour and a half away from Woodcraft in Alpharetta.

If you go broke...there will be someone that will suggest either CA or epoxy.:rolleyes:Sure is a lot of fun and company though.

Welcome to this maddness is the usual comment....

Yes we all can "justify" any purchase in one way or another. When you start this hobby, usually you have a $200 lathe and a tool or two. The next thought is, I will just get a kit or two, and two or three blanks.
Then you need MM, then turning tools, then new drill bits and collet chucks...it never ends. It is a fun and gratifying hobby, and you have joined the IAP, which is the single best way to advance your abilites possible....

Its worth the drive .... its alot of fun. Had some good demos last weekend.

I seem to have the same problem, I expect another delivery or two today actually!

Lets see -- everyone's got an 'Anonymous' -- drinkers, drugies, overeaters, probably many more. How about PA -- Penmakers Anonymous?? Not sure there's a big enough hall out there -- maybe the Rose Bowl? Or the Superdome? Or one of them big bowls in Texas?

Sure need something. I know my CC gets flexed a little too much.

Well, being from North West Georgia is not going to be held against you in any way.

Come on down early, make it a day trip ... if you get hungry there is a really good Chinese buffet about five minutes away back toward Peachtree Industrial that will fill your tank up quite nicely. Then there is the leisure drive back to North West Georgia with all your new goodies.

Come see us all at the next meeting. BTW, who is the dude with you in the picture? Is he important or do some of us older fellows even stand a chance?? Be sure to bring him along!

It is an addiction that is uncontrollable. However, the addiction and be supplied by selling the products. Nice web site but I have to agree with others that you are under pricing your work big time. Try to ask what they are worth and then you won't feel the pinch so bad in your regular finances.

What is really scary is being a teller and always around all that cash!:eek::biggrin:

It gets easier down the road. Easier to spend that is.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...........make money at this hobby???????? I give too much away... makes me feel good....... welcome to our world Stephanie

I don't think the real problem is the addiction so much as it is the pushers. You guys know who I mean. And the pushers know who they are. They have a cute name they go by here. They call themselves "VENDORS". Every time I want to make a new kind of pen, I have to deal with at least 2 different push . . . . . . I mean "VENDORS". I find the pen kit I want, then I see if I just order 1 more, then I get a discount. See how they lure us in? Plus, it's just silly to place an order for 1 pen kit. So my usual order gets up above $50 in a hurry. Sound familiar to anyone?

Well, then since I have my fancy new pen kits on order, I want the steel between center bushing from the bushing push . . . . . . . . I mean "VENDOR". Well then I again think it's silly just to order 1 set of bushings, so I think I might try "XYZ" pen down the road, so I get those too. This way I don't feel so bad with the shipping charges.

Then it's off to another "VENDOR" (I did it right that time), to get that special blank for my new pen. But I know I bought 2 kits, so I need 2 blanks. But I see if I just order a few more, I get another discount. So then I get smart. I call back the 1st Pusher (I won't pretend anymore), and add to my order just enough kits of the new pen style for the other set of bushings I bought from pusher #2. (Is everyone keeping up?).

So the long story short, this time I bought just enough kits, blanks, and bushings so I'm done shopping, right? WRONG!!! 2 of the pushers sent me FREEBIES!!. It's a never ending cycle.

Oh, and I can quit anytime I want.

1 1/2 I left home at 0520 to make the last meeting of the GA chapter so dont think you are to far away. Hope I can make it again some time, I think I am working for the next one, so all of the great deals will go to someone else I am afraid.

welcome from Alabama
