There is a change machine here at work that gives out the dollar coins that came out a few years ago. Is there any interest in getting them? I could get them, charge a small handeling and shipping fee, but you get what comes out.

I don't know what the demand is, but thought I would offer.

I just got change from that machine for a $5, and for the first time they were all the same.... Ulysses S. Grant

I'm getting ready to cut one up sometime in the next week! I'm gonna be cutting out the statue of liberty side! thought it was suitable

Just curious as I am north of the border, are these not replacing the $1 bill? I got a few of these a few years ago and just assumed they were the new standard.

Andrew,

Unlike the Canadians with the Loonie and toonies? (spelling?) - the US dollar coins havn't replaced the dollar bill (or 2 dollar bill for that matter). They augment them, but the dollar coins really havn't taken over the bill.

Back when I spent 6 months in Canada, (almost 15 years ago) I have to say it was weird for me... On one hand I'd feel like I had no 'cash' when I opened my wallet and would see none... but then I could easily pull nearly 10 dollars in change out of my pocket because of the $1 and $2 coins. Here, we need a dollar, we still reach into the wallet first.

As for the OP, our vending machines at work spit those out in change from a $5, but I tend to feed them back into the machines.

Each time we go to Canada I feel like I need to wear suspenders because of all the darn "change" dragging my drawers down. VIVA LA One dollar bill. So much lighter and so much easier to carry.

I think it was someone's bright idea to change the look from the old silver dollar coins to this.
Actually, the old silver dollars went away in 1979 when they started minting SBA dollars. Then, in 2000, the SBA coins went away in favor of the Sacagawea dollars. These coins actually continue to be made even though they started minting Presidential dollars in 2007.

Try traveling through Europe. Not only do you have a pocket full of change, but you have to remember which countries take which change.

thank you for clarifying that, i didnt have the time to post of that info

Yep, available through any bank and many other places.

4 Presidents will be minted each year until they hit all of them (similar to the way they did the State Quarters).

The first couple editions had wording on the edges as well as the faces, but it apparently confused some into thinking that some of the wording had been removed, so they put all the wording back on the faces. ("E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust" being the words that were on the edges).

edit: evidently, only the "In God We Trust" portion was moved back to the face. The E Pluribus Unum, mintage and date were all left on the rim.
